Step-by-Step User Guide: From Start to End

Follow these exact steps to set up and ace your interview using the UnlockPrep AI desktop app.

Step 1: Install and Sign In

Download the App: Depending on your operating system, click the buttons below to download and install the application.

Launch and Authenticate: Open the app and click Sign In. It will open the global Sign-In Toast prompting you to authenticate. Follow the on-screen instructions to log into your UnlockPrep AI account via your web browser securely.

Step 2: Prepare for the Interview

  1. Position the Toolbar: Click and drag any empty space on the toolbar to move the overlay anywhere on your screen. The app uses a privacy-first, “always-on-top” design. It is completely invisible to screen recording and screen sharing software (like Zoom, Google Meet, or Teams).
  2. Select Your Interview: Use the Interview Selector dropdown on the toolbar to pick your scheduled interview.
  3. Start the Session: You must click Start Session (on the Session Timer) before using any tools. (Note: Clicking any AI tool without an active session will trigger a “Please start the interview first” notification).

Step 3: Getting AI Help During the Interview

Once the session is running, you have three primary ways to leverage the AI:

  • Method 1: Auto-Listen to the Conversation

    • Click the Toggle Listen button (or press Alt + L).
    • You will see a “Listening Started” notification. The app will capture both the interviewer’s voice (system audio) and your voice (microphone).
    • The AI will automatically process the conversation and stream suggested answers or hints directly to your Chat Panel. Click Toggle Listen again (or Alt + L) to stop listening when you are done.

  • Method 2: Analyze Your Code or System Design

    • Faced with a difficult LeetCode question or a visual diagram? Click the Analyse Screen button (or press Alt + A).
    • You will see an “Analysing Screen” notification. The app takes an invisible snapshot of your screen and sends it to the AI for instant analysis and answers.

  • Method 3: Ask Custom Questions (Ask AI)

    • Need to silently ask a specific follow-up question? Click the Toggle Chat Input button (or press Alt + C).
    • An input prompt will appear. Type your question (e.g., “What is a recursive function?”) and hit Enter. The AI will provide the answer seamlessly in the chat panel.

Step 4: Managing the Overlay

  • Hide/Show the Interface: If you need to quickly hide the AI chat panel, click the Toggle Overlay button (or press Alt + H). This hides the answers while keeping the app running in the background.
  • Pause and Resume Sessions: If you’re taking a break during an extended interview or need to step away, click the Pause button to halt the session timer. When you’re ready to continue, simply select the interview again and click Resume.
  • Keep Context Clean: If you are moving on to a completely new topic or interview round, click the Clear Conversation button (or press Alt + X) to wipe the chat history. This ensures the AI doesn’t get confused by previous topic context.

Step 5: Wrap Up

  • Keep an eye on the Session Timer. When your interview is over or the timer runs out, click the Exit button to properly complete your session and securely close the application.

  • Alt + A → Analyse Screen (Captures and solves coding/screen questions)
  • Alt + L → Toggle Listen (Starts/stops capturing system audio and mic)
  • Alt + H → Toggle Overlay (Quickly show or hide the AI response panel)
  • Alt + C → Toggle Chat Input (Opens the hidden text box to type custom prompts)
  • Alt + X → Clear Conversation (Resets the AI chat context)

Updating

The app does not auto-update. Always make sure to download the latest version and replace the existing installation prior to a major interview to guarantee optimal ultra-low latency performance.
